Yes! Your body does talk!

I am in some serious trouble! I have been active since the day I jumped out of the womb. For the first time in my life I have a lower back injury and it has hit me hard! It started three days ago with lower stiff back. The next day it was a little worse. I stretched, did yoga and felt much better. Yesterday it was tight again, but not so tight to limit any mobility. So down I went to my workout room and started Insanity Max Cardio Conditioning. Although tight in the lower back, I felt much better after the warm up and stretch. It went well through out the workout, pushed hard with no back issues. No pain, stiffness had gone away, I was feeling strong. Then in the last interval, we were doing 8 jump ropes and 8 mini squat jumps. Then it happened, lower back cramped up and instant pain. Now this morning, I have very limited mobility, I can not bend down and my right lower back is a great deal of pain! So now I am going to give myself seven days off to recover. I hope its enough…….

The issue was, my ego got in the way of recovery. I had ‘signs’ three days prior to hurting my back. The signs were there and I ignored them. So I created this issue and now I am out of commission. I know you have heard or read about the signs of over training. I want to give you a list of what I have learned from this experience.

  1. Schedule: The day I hurt my back, I had worked out 7 days in a row. With my busy hockey schedule, I finish my workouts  when I can. If I have time to do a workouts, I do it no matter what, because their are times when I go 3-4 days with no time to workout. My mentality needs to change, I will go 4 days at most and a day off, no matter my schedule. My suggestion is we make time for days off, remove your ego and give your body a well deserved day off!
  2. Stretching: I stretch more now then ever before. For us males flexibility for the most part is not something we talk about or do frequently enough. I need to stretch more and you likely do too. Make the time to stretch your body, holding each stretch for a duration of 5 to 8 second count. Remember to breath on each hold to help you length each stretch! If I had taken more time to stretch maybe this back issue would not have happened. The what ‘If’ scenario!
  3. Warning Signs: Everyone has different signs and you have to know your mind and body to read them. Physically mine is usually soreness/stiffness. Which my back was feeling three days ago. I did not listen to my body. Mentally if my mind is running a half step behind and not being able to focus  on the workout, I will shut myself down. My issue, like most males is I ignore the physical signs and keep pushing. I think my female viewers are much smarter when it comes to warning signs as they listen to their bodies and make smarter choices for the most part.
  4. Ego: You would think being 41 years of age, I would be smarter, but obviously time does not help with some stupidity. Ego is one of the biggest reasons for injuries, including overuse injuries like the one I am dealing with. If we would stop and listen when out body speaks, we would be much further ahead!

I hope this has made you consider when you take days off and how you treat your body. I have to make changes or this will likely happen again! When your body speaks, please listen!

Insanity Max Cardio Conditioning – Nov 18, 2012

Officially messed my back up just now. Not sure what is up with is, no real pain just very stiff. Completed Insanity Max Cardio Conditioning! It feels like it was never going to end! The crazy thing when you get fitter is you push harder! It never becomes easier but that I why do it. I love a challenge. I will do some stretches tonight before bed and tomorrow. Hopefully it feels good enough to go for a swim with Shellie. If not day off. Off for some results and recovery formula, supper and then a movie!

Fitness Update – Insanity – Max Pylo Intervals

Good evening everyone. Sorry for the lack of updates on my exercise.

Last Thursday and Friday, my wife (Shellie) and I went swimming. Okay swims from 30 minutes to 40 minutes. Could have been better on Thursday, felt tired and muscles were sore. Still not a bad workout.

On Saturday we did Les Mills Pump and Shred. This workout went much better the previous one! So I was very happy, had way more energy and was solid through out. I need to up the weight on the squat track to 55 lbs. I could do more weight but when I add more the 55 pounds my legs are messed up on the ice with skates on. It is not a good combination, if you can imagine! The lunge track still is giving me issues! Drives me nuts as its not the weight, it my balance! I try different stances and distance and I just have trouble holding good form. Its improved but I am a ways off! Need to keep focused and slow down. I will get there.

Now to the work out today – both Shellie and I did it together. It was Insanity, Max Pylo Intervals! All I can say, “It tore me apart”. I am in better then average shape but there is no way I could finish that workout. It has been the hardest single workout I have done with any Beach Body product! The variety Shaun T gives you and the speed your doing it at is intense! Even after 9 hours since I finished it, my muscles can still feel the workout! Even after having the P90X Recovery formula! I recommend Insanity to anyone who likes a challenge and is at an average fitness level at a minimum.

My nutrition has been about 90% overall. Still sneaking in the odd Halloween chocolate. Hey we all have weakness! I am out of shakeology and waiting for the next bag to come. I miss the drink as, I feel much better after taking it. I have improved my hydration as I have upped my water intake by a couple more glasses per day. I am at 8 per day, but after these 1 hour Insanity workouts are feel I need to push that to 10.

Tomorrow is Les Mills Pump and Shred! Have a great night!

Insanity Program – Max Cardio Intervals and Swim

Last night was fantastic, the four kids received a ton of candy! To much to be honest! End of the day the kids had fun with their friends. It was a cold night with now and a bad wind chill. The kids braved it out for a good 2 hours.

Once we put them to bed I had a late night workout. I am starting the 2 month of my hybrid Les Mills Pump and Insanity workout. Tonight was Insanity program, Max Cardio Intervals! It kicked my ass and then some! Even though I was tired and cold from walking around, I pushed through. The last 10 minutes was a struggle, I intend to be at a point physically where I will keep up by the end of this month. The energy and endurance formula helped as it does give you more energy through out the workout. I would recommend this supplement for the insanity program. My diet was not the best for supper, as I eat 1 and 1/2 hot dogs. The whole work out, I was burping. That did not help! I did take my P90X Recovery drink afterwards! Tasty stuff!

Today I went swimming with Shellie for the first time in a week. It was a great swim, I have noticed that my endurance has increased! As I am not resting at all for the first 20 to 30 minutes into the swim. That was not possible even 2 weeks ago. This hybrid has helped my cardiovascular endurance! We swam for 40 minutes and felt strong the complete time in the pool!

Back to Les Mills Pump tomorrow! New pictures to come soon!

Good Day everyone! The workout from yesterday had an affect on my body as my muscles (not sore) but for sure fatigued! My body and mind were not 100% this morning. It was also my fourth day straight this week with a 7 AM ice session. Fridays are always the toughest days for me.

Having said all this I still do my workouts on Friday. I usually will not miss a Friday workout. Why? These are the days you need to do your workouts and show commitment to your goals. I believe you need to face the adversity, show some mental toughness and over come the excuses we make not to do something. So down I went and did Insanity Pure Cardio, one of the toughest workouts Shaun T puts you through.

The start was very rough, very slow but the form was executed well. By the third round into warmup I started feeling more energized. The Energy and Endurance formula I took 5 minutes prior helped. By the end of the stretch I was feeling much more alert and the body was awake! Thru the next 15 minutes I push hard with no hint of any tiredness. The ‘frog leaps’ track is the one that you feel the effects of doing an exercise for one minute! It was better today then in the past. I usually stop 2 times for small 5 second break but today I only stopped once!

Overall this workout was excellent, and in most cases these are the days you will have the best workouts. The days were you commit to being better! Remember if you are starting your fitness from scratch, you dont have to start your fitness journey doing Insanity workouts. I have been working out since 2009, in 3 years you will advance you fitness to this level as well. Start with Slim in 6 or P90, great workouts to increase your foundation to being able to handle Insanity or P90X!

I hope your exercise went as well as mine did today!
