Tragic Store – End the Obsiety Trend

This article is from Carl Daikeler, CEO, of Team Beach Body. A story that everyone needs to read!

I received this note this morning from Beachbody Coach Dave Ward.

Good morning Carl,

I have a story to share, that isn’t very happy I’m afraid. The reminders of who we are, what we do and the urgency of the task at hand are often harsh. In June, a man name Adriel Barrera gave us one of those. He had about 100 pounds to lose and was working with one of our Coaches (Ryan Chapman who has himself lost over 100 pounds) and they became very close over about a two year period. Adriel actually decided to become a Coach and became very passionate about our cause, because he saw it as a way to help himself, while helping others. He accepted responsibility for what he had done to his body and then accepted responsibility for changing it. He also had a big WHY: “I am interested in staying alive for my 7 year old daughter and wife”. He was on that path. Unfortunately, Adriel fell victim to a massive heart attack that took his life. He leaves behind a wife and daughter that will undoubtedly miss him very much.

His wife logged into his Facebook account yesterday to give us a message of love and hope, explain the circumstances surrounding his death and to thank Ryan for doing what he did to try and save Adriel’s life. The harsh reality is that we didn’t get to help Adriel quick enough. That hurts quite a lot, as I’m sure you can imagine. Ryan rallied and did what he could to help the family (more on that here), but reality is reality and Adriel Barrera doesn’t get a second chance.

If you are reading this, don’t wait…don’t hesitate…don’t over-think it…stop planning…stop procrastinating…stop trying to figure out the perfect system, and just do it. People that need help are everywhere around you. Find one. Even one can make a huge difference. The life you save may be your own, or it may be someone else’s. That’s who we are and what we do. – Dave Ward.

No one ever enjoys reading these kinds of stories. But worse would be to know of it and not share it in order to avoid a similar outcome for anyone else we can reach sooner than later. For that, I commend Dave for putting this out there.

Adriel’s story is further proof that the consequences of ignoring lifestyle issues are very real, and very painful. Not just painful for the person who’s life is limited or cut short, but for everyone around them who aches. Adriel will be missed, but his example will hopefully help us turn this tragic story into a story of hope for the others we can reach out to…

And we have to do it TODAY. Not tomorrow. Not after the holidays. TODAY. This is our work.

Get started now! End the trend! Here is your first step! Let me help guide you!

Dry run on P90X

I am doing some dry runs on P90X. I have the Under 16 Challenge Cup to coach in next week. So starting in November I will start P90X have the pics taken and the fitness test down.

Today I am going to do a dry run with Chest and Back. I have the pullup bar installed, taken my protein drink and I am ready to GO! Let the Pain begin – Bring IT Tony Horton!

Okay so I did Chest and Back about 30 minutes ago. Yes its tough, thank God I did P90 before!
Review:
Push Ups – Did average of 15 for each exercise – dive bombers max at about 9 – loved the push ups.
Pull Ups – Only could do 1 to 3 on my own then used the chair. I did a total of 10 reps for all pullups. I will increase this number next time thru.
Ab Ripper X – What a mess. I can not do many of the exercises. Climbing my leg I cant even do. I have so much work to do here. It was frustrating. Considering I can get thru the P90 level 3-4 with out breaks. I cant see how a person who is completely out of shape can work thru this work. For the ones that do – my hat is off to you!!!!!

When Tony says take your supplements – I always think “stop selling your products”. I agree!, get a recovery drink, protein powder and vitamins. This is much more then just visiting your local gym or doing a simple yoga class. Eat right and do what you can. Tomorrow Plyo. I cant wait!

Benefits of Whey Protein

In recent years, the subject of whey protein has come up often in health discussions. Know what whey protein is, its possible benefits and side effects and more as you read on.
What is Whey Protein
Whey protein is actually a term used to describe a group of globular proteins that can be separated from whey. When cow’s milk is used to manufacture cheese, it also leads to the production of whey, which may or may not be discarded. It is a mixture of lactoglobulin, alpha-lactalbumin and serum albumin.
Similar to protein found in egg white, whey protein can also be irreversibly changed by heat. When made part of the pasteurization process, it becomes less bio-active. If not, whey protein naturally becomes bio-active which basically means it contains a high concentration of cysteine and consequently glutathione, an antioxidant that is essential to improved fitness and health.
Bio-active whey protein is an active source for protein but exposure to extreme heat can easily reduce the amount of cysteine in it without affecting its protein content and basic food value. Native whey protein
What Makes It Good for the Body
Because whey protein contains an inordinate amount of essential and non-essential acids, it frequently plays a prominent role in most low-carb and high-protein diets. Another reason for this is because of its low content of fats and of course, carbohydrates.

Why Pregnant Mothers Love Whey Protein
A number of OBs have advised their gravid patients to increase their intake of whey protein because it will provide the basic amount of amino acids needed by the growing infants inside their bodies. An increased intake of whey protein will naturally improve and speed up the development of the baby. Also, increased intake of whey protein will indirectly improve the immune system of the baby. In its growing stages, it is highly vulnerable to different types of illnesses. With the help of whey protein, it grow faster and better and more equipped to defend itself against any health complication.

Whey Protein for Bodybuilding Enthusiasts
For bodybuilders, muscle growth is everything and that’s why they love whey protein so much. Studies have satisfactorily proven that whey protein can lead to acceleration of muscle development. This is welcomed news especially for bodybuilders who are only a few weeks away from the date of competition but is still in high need of muscle growth.

How it Helps Athletes Busy Recovering from Old Injuries
In this case, whey protein saves the day once more because it can be used to supplement diets of individuals who are suffering from compromised immune systems. Basically, it helps athletes heal faster and feel better.

A Weapon against Degenerative Diseases
Although you can’t truly say that any disease is less painful than the other if both have life-altering consequences, it is an inarguable fact however that degenerative diseases are one of the worst health complications to suffer from. These illnesses tend to subject people to a protracted form of suffering and with symptoms with increasing levels of severity. They commonly affect three systems in particular: the nervous system, the muscular system and the skeletal system.

Although rarely curable, degenerative diseases can be treated through chemotherapy, surgical operations and the proper diet. Whey protein is often a part of this diet because of its rehabilitative benefits especially when it comes to muscle growth. Cancer, diabetes and AIDS have symptoms that causes muscle strength and growth to deteriorate – an undesirable effect that can be combated with increased intake of whey protein.

Where to Buy Whey Protein
Are you sufficiently convinced of the benefits of whey protein then? If so, you should be happy to know that you can avail of commercial whey protein product in most supermarkets and specialty food stores specializing in healthy food.

Ending with a Warning
Whey protein is good for the body – no doubt about it – but too much consumption of anything is never beneficial. Too much intake of whey protein can lead to unnecessary complications of your liver. And need we remind you that the liver is the next most important organ in the body? Lastly, lactose intolerant individuals must consume whey protein isolate rather than the normal variety as the former has less lactose content.

P90 time is coming to an end

5 more days left and P-90 is history!

Sad in a way but very excited about P90X. I have been watching the CD’s and it is going to be extremely more difficult. P-90 did its job though I will post my results unlike not posting stats for day 60. I still have the pictures for day 60 and I will make sure Day 30,60 and 90 go up.

The only issue and I have mentioned this before is the repetition on P90. By the end its just boring. Having said that it is easy and very effective for an out of shape person to get a head start on their fitness. I would promote this program to everyone who has not done any regular activity in a while.

My results have been fantastic! I did want to have more defined abs than I have right now. I think this might have to do more with genetics as I have always had trouble losing the fat on my lower back and sides. My diet overall I would rate as around 85 to 90%. Although lately I have had more meals and treats then anytime during the first 75 days. Having said all this I am fitting in pants that I have not had on in 2 years. So my body is moving in the right direction.

Were to now. I have 5 days left of exercise with P90. I will take two days off once I am done and start doing some p90x routines to get use to the pace and craziness Tony drives us to do. Then Nov 1 is my test day for P90X and then Back/Chest on the 2nd.

Its great to see something thru from start to finish. I look fwd to the the challenges P90X will bring! I all I have to remember is – PUSH PLAY and BRING IT!

P-90X or Master Series P90

I am at that time to decide on what program I will move onto next. I have narrowed it down to MS P90 or P90X.

I have read some reviews on MS P90 and over all they are just average. After reading these I am not so sure it is the program I want to buy. They say Tony talks a little to much and the workouts are not as hard as they could be. So now I am looking into P-90X today.

My only reservation about ordering P90X is the added costs for dumbells and the pullup bar. I am not sure if the pull up bar is even going to fit in my door frames I have at home. I just have to read some reviews. I am not afraid of the work P90X would take. Infact I love the workouts. The only one that concerns me is the Yoga being 90 minutes long!

My wife wants to do a yoga program. So I think I will buy her one of the Yoga Booty Ballet programs. I have to google “reviews on P90X”…………………… Later

Ab Ripper

Hi Everyone,
No pictures yet as I have not had time to grab my wife to take them. I hopefully will have them up by this weekend.

I am now moving to level 3 to level 4 with sculpt and sweat. Simple pushing my self harder. For ad ripper 200 I have moved from 20 to 25 reps per exercise. Made a huge difference regarding the intensity.

I feel 100% stronger in the last 2 weeks. My cloths feel looser. The only issue is, I want to eat more then my 2000 calories. I will stick with my calorie count for the next month, then decide what to do from there.

I am considering doing P90X next over the P90 Master Series. Not sure what to do. If anyone has suggests, please add your comments.

Beach Body Fitness Update

My meal plan’s have been very good as off late. The only hipup has been the meal at earl’s. Since starting this journey I see now what a healthy diet can do. My energy is up and my fatique is down. I have slimmed up for sure. My clothes fit looser and I Feel stronger! I will do my measurements 2 weeks after I come back from vacation. I have also found that some healthy food ACTUALLY tastes good. For example, hummas! Who know!

As for the exercise, I have to do it! Not once have I thought “I dont want to do it today” I think there are a number of reasons for this. One, the workouts at the longest are 45 minutes, second you have a video to watch which is like having a trainer there, third the motivation to move on to levels 3-4 drives me. When I am done P90 the motivation will be to move on with the Beach Body Master Series or P90X. As for my wife, she is doing very well. She struggles with the diet, as she has a sweet tooth. She has done all the exercies with missing only 1 day since we started. I am very proud of the what she is accomplishing. Way to go Dear!!

Benefits of YOGA – P90X, YOGA Booty Ballet

Yoga benefits the body, mind and spirit. In recent years, yoga has worked its way into the mainstream health and fitness programs because people have begun to understand the benefits that those who practice it gain. When practiced regularly it can make a measured difference in a person’s physical, mental and spiritual health.

The physical benefits of yoga are outstanding. It’s been shown that yoga can:

  • Increase muscle, joint and tendon flexibility
  • Tone and strengthen muscles
  • Increase cardiovascular efficiency
  • Decrease blood pressure
  • Increase respiratory functions
  • Improve eye-hand coordination
  • Improve posture
  • Improve balance
  • Increase energy levels
  • Lower weight
  • Increase endurance
  • Eliminate toxins from the body
  • Heal damaged muscles
  • Limit the effects of diabetes, digestive orders, arthritis, asthma and heart conditions and decrease dependence on drugs for these problems
  • Manage pain
  • Reduce anxiety
  • Increased stamina
  • Slow the aging process
  • Improve the immune system

One of the most impressive physical benefits of yoga that many people report having is an increased awareness of their bodies and when their bodies aren’t performing as they should. They can actually sense when a health problem is beginning. This allows them to start treating the problem before it goes any further, preempting many serious illnesses.

Yoga not only contributes to physical health; with regular practice it also can improve mental health. Practitioners of yoga have reported the benefits for centuries, and recently the scientific community has begun to research and confirm what has always been believed. The psychological benefits of yoga can include:

  • Mental clarity
  • Stress reduction
  • Emotional groundedness
  • Increased body awareness
  • A relaxed mind
  • Improved ability to pay attention, concentrate and retain information
  • A countering effect to the feelings of depression or helplessness
  • Increased brain activity including an improved communication between the left side of the brain and the right side of the brain
  • Positive changes in mood
  • Positive change sin vitality and energy
  • An increased sex drive and a healthier view of sex
  • Pride in taking care of the body
  • Kinesthetic awareness
  • A decrease in hostility and anger
  • Increased social skills
  • A feeling of being refreshed immediately after yoga – as if just waking from a good nap

On the spiritual level, many who practice yoga also report benefits. Some of the spiritual benefits believed to come from yoga are:

  • A greater awareness of nature and a person’s connection to nature
  • A feeling of being at one with the universe
  • An awareness of how the yoga practitioner’s life affects the lives around him
  • A sense of peace
  • Enjoyment of oneself
  • Enjoyment of life
  • Awaking of the energy within oneself
  • A connection with the soul
  • An awareness of the Life Force

It’s easy to see how the three areas that benefit from the practice of yoga – body, mind and spirit – can intertwine. When the three areas are working together in harmony, the benefits of yoga increase. Because of the effects that yoga has, there is much that a person can accomplish that he may not be able to if not for yoga.

For instance, many people report that practicing yoga has helped them with smoking cessation. When the body is less stressed, when there is an increased awareness of the body, when there is an emotional groundedness and when there is sense of peace, it is easier to resist the pull of a cigarette or many other addictive habits. The practice of yoga can change much in person’s life.
